Fight Back

I rolled my eyes this morning when the news guy on TV said that the next clip would be on the gun debate. I thought, “Here we go again. More anti vomitus from the media.”

I was pleasantly surprised. Not only was it delivered in a neutral manner, but the news itself was pretty good. Apparently, law enforcement is encouraging people at schools in mass shooting situations to fight back rather than flee. Rather than hide, confront the shooter.

This is a good step. Returning force with force is unexpected and makes it not as easy for a criminal to achieve his goal and makes getting what he wants (theft, rape, murder, etc.) maybe not so much worth the personal cost to him (injury, death).

Yes, the person or people who fight back could be hurt or killed. But when people fight back in any situation, they have a greater chance of living and of saving those who can’t fight back. Life is worth fighting for!

This advice doesn’t solve, however, the issue that most schools are sitting ducks as gun-free zones. Teachers, administrators, and staff who have taken responsibility for their own defense by purchasing a gun, getting the proper training, continuously practicing, and getting a concealed permit should be allowed to carry wherever they go, which includes their schools.

But it is a step forward. Three cheers for that!
